A broken or worn tooth, rebuilt in an office with its own milling machine

Dr. Gail Sorensen restores teeth with crowns, onlays and fillings. The crowns are cut here from a ceramic block, from a scan of your tooth, and she fits each one herself.

The milling machine

From scan to crown, in one room

Four things happen between the exam and the fitting. Here is what each one is, and who does it.

  1. 1

    A scan of your tooth

Dr. Sorensen prepares the tooth, then passes a small camera over it. The scan stands in for the tray of putty.

  2. 2

    She designs the crown

On the screen she shapes the crown to fit your tooth and the teeth around it. The software proposes a shape; she decides it.

  3. 3

    The machine cuts it

A milling machine carves the crown from a block of ceramic. It follows her design and makes no decisions of its own.

  4. 4

    She fits and checks it

She tries the crown in your mouth, checks how your teeth meet and adjusts it by hand before it is cemented.

Plainly

What the machine does, and what it can't

A milling machine is a tool in Dr. Sorensen's hands. It shortens some steps and changes none of her decisions.

One visit, or two

Dr. Sorensen tells you at the exam which it will be for your tooth.

  • When one visit is possible

The tooth is sound under the damage, the material and shade are straightforward and the day has room. Then the crown can be milled and fitted in the same appointment.

  • When it takes two

A tooth that needs a root canal first, a crown that has to match a front tooth closely, or a bridge may need a second visit or a dental lab.

  • Owner's note

    Add your one-visit policy here

Say which restorations you finish in a single visit, for which teeth, and what your schedule allows. Until you add one, this site makes no one-visit promise.

What we restore

Crowns and onlays

A crown covers a tooth that is cracked, worn or heavily filled. An onlay covers part of it.

Fillings

A filling repairs a tooth that has a cavity, in a visit with a short numbing.

Grinding wears teeth down. Dr. Sorensen shows you where, and what protects them.

The office

A one-dentist office on Washington Boulevard

Two Rivers Dental is a small office with one dentist, one hygienist and a front desk.

Dr. Sorensen opened the practice for people with a tooth that has broken, worn down or been filled too many times. Most of her day is crowns, onlays and fillings, so the machine, the scanner and the chair are set up for them.

Questions about a milled crown

If yours isn't here, call or send a message. Please leave out medical details.

Will I leave with my crown the same day?

Sometimes, but we can't promise it. It depends on the tooth, the material and the day. Dr. Sorensen tells you at the exam.

Is a milled crown as good as one from a lab?

Both are accepted ways to make a crown. Neither suits every tooth. Dr. Sorensen explains why she suggests one or the other for yours.

Do I get a temporary crown?

If your crown can't be finished in the visit, yes. It holds the tooth until the final one is fitted.

Will it hurt?

Most people feel pressure and some tenderness. We numb the tooth, you can ask for a break at any time, and we stop whenever you ask.

How is a crown billed?

The fee is in your written estimate before we start. See how fees work for insurance, paying yourself and receipts.
