Fillings

A filling repairs a tooth that has a cavity or a small chip. It is for a tooth with enough healthy structure left to hold it.

What happens

A filling is usually one visit.

  1. 01

    Step 1: Exam and estimate

Dr. Sorensen shows you the tooth and gives you the fee in writing before she starts.

  2. 02

    Step 2: Numbing

She numbs the tooth and waits until you are sure it is numb.

  3. 03

Step 3: Cleaning out the cavity

She removes the damaged part of the tooth and shapes the space.

  4. 04

Step 4: The filling and your bite

She places the filling in layers, shapes it and checks how your teeth meet.

Comfort, choices and care

  • Comfort

A local anesthetic numbs the tooth. You may feel pressure and hear the handpiece. Raise a hand any time you want a break.

  • If you wait

A cavity usually grows. A small one can be a small repair; a large one can mean a crown. Some people choose to watch a small spot, and she will say what to look for.

  • Risks and after-care

Your lip and cheek stay numb for a few hours. A tooth can be sensitive to cold for a few days. Call us if your bite feels high or the pain gets worse.

  • How it's billed

The fee is in your written estimate before we start.

Questions about fillings

What are fillings made of?

Dr. Sorensen goes over the materials she uses and why, and you can ask about the choices before she starts.

How long does a filling take?

Less time than a crown. Katia can give you the time for your visit when you book.

When does a tooth need a crown instead?

When too much of the tooth is gone for a filling to hold. She shows you the tooth and explains why.
